QUEERINTHIA
Hidden far up in the Karawanken mountains is a village that no one has ever heard of. Even hikers who think they know every bend in the mountains would never guess that a hidden, isolated community lives between the steep mountain peaks of the Karawanken: QUEERinthia. Legend has it that it settled there a long time ago in order to live freely and self-determinedly – a queer, alpine utopia.
This year, the community has decided to celebrate its coming out. It wants to introduce itself to the people of the valley to give them back the diversity they are in danger of losing. A big village festival is being organized for this purpose. Is the valley ready?
Based on this fiction, the play QUEERinthia tells the biographies of six people from Carinthia. Accompanied by documentary film footage and music, we learn about queer life in Carinthia from those who have moved here, those who have left and those who have returned home.
The term “queer” was once used as an insult for gay, lesbian and trans people, as well as all those outside the categories of man and woman. Throughout history, however, the term has been appropriated as a proud self-designation. Queerness thwarts binary logic and opens the view for spaces in between. It denotes a border region – just as Carinthia itself is.
The play is dedicated to the untold queer stories of Carinthia, reporting on pain and hope. Between fiction and documentary, it not only depicts oppression, but also sketches a spectrum of the region’s diversity.
